HOW MUCH & WHAT
SNOW GOOSE SPREADSnow geese (lesser and greater) fly in large flights. They leave the roost in large flights of a hundred to over a thousand. They feed in fields in large numbers. The best way to hunt snow geese is to resemble snow geese. This means large decoy spreads with 100 percent movement. My experience snow goose hunts that resulted in largest number of snow geese taken over the last 10 years - hunts that produce 100 plus harvest had the hunters dressed in white, had the hunters inside the spread and in grain fields (rice, beans and wheat). How Many Decoys are Necessary – A snow spread, even for one or two hunters should be 500 to 700 decoys. The typical snow goose spread for 4 hunters is 1,000 to 1,200 Texas Rags or Windtamer Wind Sock decoys, spaced about 3 to 6 feet apart. In any wind every decoy will appear to be walking. Unlike Texas Rags and other type windsocks, the Windtamer will hold the full body shape (after puffed) all morning, NOT look like limp cloths on a line. A Windsock Bag will hold (correctly) 200 Texas Rags or 100 Windtamers. It requires one bag of rags to hide one hunter when shooting from the spread. This is true when hunting in laydown blinds or white parkas and backrest. Transporting Bags to the Field When the decoys, bags, guns, etc. are taken into the field of the hunt either by auto or ATV the number of bags IS NOT a major concern. However, if the decoys, bags, guns, etc. are packed by the hunters through a grain field (some times a muddy grain field) the number and type of decoys IS a very major concern. It is difficult to walk 250 to 400 yards in ankle deep mud with nothing on your back or in your hands. Add a bag of decoys, a blind bag, a shell bag, shotgun, backrest or laydown blind and “stuff.” Walking is a struggle. Do yourself a favor if you plan to snow goose hunt in fields get an ATV with 4-wheel drive. A 6-wheel ATV with bench seat and back tray is better – and more costly. And, if you are going to hunt with several friends at the same location, purchase a Field Trailer. The 4x6 foot DNG Field Trailer was designed to place all the bags of decoys, specialty decoys, hunters guns, bags and miscellaneous “stuff” into the field behind an ATV. When possible, place the decoys in the trailer at the beginning of the year; keep the trailer with decoys covered with a waterproof camo tarp (Ozark Trail camo tarps found at Wal Mart) or in a dry facility. Attaching at ATV to a filled trailer at 5 AM is mush easier than loading decoys, etc. into a trailer or stacking on an ATV. The camo waterproof tarp coupled with a camo ATV cover changes an ATV and trailer into a couple of clumps of vegetation. How Much Movement is Necessary Snow geese may not be smarter than other geese but the large flights have many eyes. If the spread looks still, the snow goose flights will keep going until they find a more natural looking spread or live geese. A spread should have 100 percent movement – natural feeding movement. Before trying for 100 percent decoy movement, not 75% or 85% but 100%. On more occasions than I want to remember flight after flight of snows, passed up our spread to drift off and land in a field, some with live feeding geese. To make matters worse on many occasions, after we left the field, while loading up in the autos, the geese would pick up where they were and land in the same location our spread had been all morning. This hasn’t happened, when hunting in a feeding field, since my hunting party has gone to 100 percent spread movement. At least a third of any big flight will break off and circle within “harvest” range. Recommended These are the decoys that I now use and the reason. In a wind – light or heavy Texas Rags or Windtamer Rags are designed to fill with air and appear to be geese walking. The All-Wind decoys will flutter and give mild movement. Goose Magnet landing decoy wings will give a landing movement with wings fluttering and will appear to be snows hoping over other feeding decoys or a small flight of landing decoys. Wave Magnet decoys combined with Airgoose balloon decoys (filled with helium in zero to light wind and air for heavy wind) give the appearance of a small flight upwind coming in to land. The spinning wing decoys (Mr. Lucky or Air Lucky painted white with rose colored bill and legs) attract from a long distance away and are used to keep the in coming snows attention. The use of Farm Form kites (3) flown at 40 to 60 yards high at the upwind rear sides of spread, two on one side and the third on the opposite side. They fly when the wind is between 7 and 15 mph. Above or below these wind speeds, just don’t use kites. There is either not enough wind to keep it kites aloft or so strong that they do not fly right. Use Airgoose balloon decoys for winds between zero and 7 mph, over 15 mph try one kite, no more. Carry a Head Bag with 50 alert heads and second Head Bag with 50 feeder heads. Add the THP white decoy heads to the windsocks. Scatter the feeding heads along the downwind perimeter of the spread. Scattered the alert heads in the field of the spread.
ATV & TRAILERAn ATV with a DNG Field Trailer. This allows a hunter the privilege of carrying Windsock decoy bags with 1,200 windsock rag decoys, 2 Windsock decoy bags with 200 All Wind Headless decoys, a All Wind Sling with 6 dozen All Wind Decoys, a duffle bag or 2nd All Wind Sling with 6 dozen Goose Magnets, a shell size field bag with 2 dozen Airgoose Balloon decoys, a 2nd small field bag with 4 each Wave Magnet decoys (2 snow and 2 dark), a bag with 2 each Wing Waver decoys, a plastic case with 4 each Air Lucky decoys painted to resemble snows and two Mr. Lucky bags with two Mr. Lucky battery operated decoys painted white to resemble snows. Four each Blanket Blinds and four each THP Spread Back Backrest. Three Head Bags with 50 each heads in each (50 white alert, 50 white feeding, the third bag has 25 of each alert and feeding brown). Four each Brown Plastic Sleds for those muddy fields. All of this equipment is left on the trailer, covered with a camo waterproof tarp for the season. Using the trailer leaves the ATV to carry gear bags, shell bags, coolers, shotguns and miscellaneous. The trailer will hold more, if special items for any hunt are required. The poles for the Goose Magnets, Mr. Lucky, Air Lucky and Wave Magnet decoys are carried in 6-inch PVC tubes secured to the front two corners of the trailer. Standard items in the front of the trailer are a first aid kit, spare tire, Fix A Flat, 4-way lug wrench, tank of helium and 2 gallon can of gas. Note: One hunter in a damp but not muddy or frozen field can put out 200 decoys in around 20 minutes. 4 to 6 Hunters (no ATV or Auto) – The hunters need 1,000 to 1,200 windsock type decoys, 2-dozen body type decoys, 6 landing type, 1 string type and 6 Airgoose Balloon decoys. 2 bags of heads – 1 of alert and 1 of feeding. The Windsock bags depends on Texas Rags or Windtamer decoys. The All Wind decoys require a All Wind sling, the Goose Magnets with 42-inch graphite poles or 36-inch ½-inch metal conduit can fit into the All Wind Sling or a side opening duffel bag. If you like to keep types of decoys separated, separate All Wind Sling or a 42 plus length side open duffel bag will hold the Goose Magnets. A 36-inch plus bag will hold the decoys if metal conduit is used.
THE DECOYS ARE –Windsock Rag Decoys – Due to cost, weight, and transporting will make up the bulk of most snow goose spreads. There are two popular rag windsocks used by snow goose hunters.
White-Blue Decoy Mix - Mix your Windtamer and or Texas Rag decoys in snow and blue – depending on the make up of the flights feeding in your area. Start with 50 blue and 50 Canada/Spec to 500 snow decoys and add blue and/or Canada/Spec if you notice more than a 10:1 ratio in the fields. Design - The number of hunters or ability to get the decoys into the field, will dictate the width and length of the spread. Storage & Transportation – The Windsock Decoy Bag is a black mesh 30” x 34” bag with shoulder loops. The bag is designed to drain and ventilate. Dowels do not hang up on sides of bag when inserting rolls of rags into the bag. The bag will hold 200 Texas Rag Decoys rolled into packages 10 rags per pack or100 Windtamers rolled into packs of 10 decoys per pack. Repairs - Extra packages of Texas Rags, Windtamers and dowels in wood and fiberglass can be purchased and replacements made through out the season. Durability - The Windtamers have only been on the market for one season but with fiberglass stakes are projected to last 3+ seasons at a 100 days use per season. The Texas Rag Windsock Decoys & Windtamer Windsock Decoys are damaged two ways 90% of the time.
THP WINDSOCK HEADS – A life size white plastic head in two styles – feeder and alert. Designed to fit on a 3/8” or 1/4” stakes. Very durable, will not crack in half or break in cold weather. Place feeder heads on the downwind side of the spread and about 1 alert head for each 20 to 25 Texas Rags or Windtamer decoys. THP Heads can be purchased in packages of 6 – all either feeder or alert. Available in white for snow and blue goose, brown for Spec and black for Canada goose. Storage & Transportation – Head Bag will hold 50 heads. The bag is black plastic mesh 24” x 36.” This bag is can be used for a “trash bag” – shotgun shell hulls, paper, empty plastic bottles and cans. Always pick-up and clean up the hunting area. Repairs – None needed. I’ve been using the same 50 heads for 5 goose hunting seasons. ALL-WIND DECOYS – The very best down-wind specialty decoy. Down wind specialty decoys are those decoys that are placed on the down wind side of the spread in front of the hunters. The decoys are placed to be the first decoy seen by the in-coming geese. The All Wind will keep the landing geese eyes off the hunter, as the snows float into the Landing Zone. All Wind Decoys are placed in family (6 to 12 decoys) groups 5 to 6 feet downwind of the edge of the rag spread 10 to 12 feet apart directly in front of each hunter. Storage & Transportation – 6 dozen can be carried in an All Wind Sling. The weight is considerably less than shells, less reflective than silhouettes and far less bulky than full body decoys. All Wind Sling with decoys is stored by tack the sling on the floor or hanging on a wall. Durability – A little soap and water and the decoy is clean. A broken dowel (if wood) can be easily replaced in a few minutes. With fiberglass stakes the All-Wind decoy is like the energizer bunny – just goes and goes and goes. HEADLESS ALL-WIND DECOYS – The best replacement for late season Texas Rags or Windtamer Wind Sock decoys. The Headless All-Wind decoys are All-Wind Bodies on 18-inch 3/8” hardwood dowels – without heads. Like the All Wind Decoys (without heads) the Headless All-Wind are placed about 10 feet apart. All-Wind decoys (20 Headless to 1 All-Wind ratio) are needed to be placed through out the spread to have life like alert heads through out the spread and feeding at the downwind perimeter. Storage & Transportation – 150 Headless All-Wind decoys will fit in a Windsock Decoy Bag. Durability - A little soap and water and the decoy is clean. A broken dowel can be easily replaced in a few minutes. Note: The liquid detergent Simple Green is biodegradable and does a fantastic cleaning job. GOOSE MAGNETS - The Goose Magnet is a landing decoy. The decoy has extendable wings using a molded ABS struts not affected by cold or rain, a hard molded polystyrene detailed and painted head, spun bound fabric body. Body is a windsock – 32-inches bill to tail. The wings can be expanded to 48-inches or fold to compact in size less than 6-inches wide (body & wings). The decoy is supported by a pole, either a 42-inch graphite pole or ½-inch metal conduit. Note: 10-foot conduit cut into thirds, painted with tan, dark brown or black paint. A wood grain plastic self adhesive shelf paper is a better camo for the conduit – it will last (with a little touch up) for 5 years+ . The wings are fully extended in zero to light wind. As the wind is stronger the wings are folded in toward the body. Gives a very life like landing decoy. The Goose Magnet is available in Snow, Blue, Spec and Canada geese. Some hunters use the decoy with the graphite poles to hide under. Others set them in ‘flights” of 3 to 6 staggered in both height and distance outside the spread to represent geese coming to the decoys on the ground or my favorite, set in groups of 3 inside the spread sides about half-way from front to rear. This application uses the Goose Magnet as a goose “hopping” over ground geese to get to feed first. The decoy will spin and direct the head into the wind due to the windsock body. If the wind changes so will the direction of the decoy. An All Wind Sling can be used to carry the decoys or a 46-inch long side opening duffel bag. The heads can be removed and placed at the ends of the bag. The poles then placed along the bottom of the bag, finally placing the decoys – half pointing to one end and the other half pointing to the opposite end. Three to four dozen with poles or conduit will fit in one bag (the girth of the bag making the difference). Discount stores – Wal Mart, Target, etc. carry a multitude of bags, as do most Army Surplus Stores. If an All Wind Sling is used the heads do not need to be removed and 4-dozen to 6-dozen can be placed in the sling with graphite poles. If weight makes a difference the graphite poles are dark gray in color and much lighter than the metal conduit. WAVE MAGNETS – Is a string decoy. The line is 38-feet long with five detailed life like magnum bodies. The bodies are made from a spun fabric. The decoys have a top and bottom side. On the bottom is a pocket. The pocket is designed to catch air in low wind conditions AND to be filled with weight in high wind. NO flapping noise like experienced in other plastic string decoys. The Wave Magnets work best if elevated to 8 to 10 feet. Carrying two each 10-foot ½-inch conduit is a problem. However, carrying 6 each 3-foot pieces isn’t a problem. They will fit in the Goose Magnet duffel bag. Cut a 10-foot piece of ½-inch conduit into thirds. The easiest and less expensive cutting tool is a conduit cutter. A hacksaw or electric saw can be used. Duckngoose.com offers for sale “1/2-inch Conduit Couplers.” These couplers are used to secure pieces of ½-inch conduit together. Note: Three other items are required to set up multiple pieces of ½” conduit. The best location for the Wave Magnet String Decoy is at the rear center of the spread. The line should the strung perpendicular to the wind. In zero or very light wind conditions the Snow Goose Airgoose Balloon decoys can be used to move the string decoys. The decoy is designed to give the appearance of a flight of birds flying into the ground decoys.
Wave Magnet Durability – Each season my Wave Magnet decoys get wet and muddy. I hand wash with kitchen soap and lay in the back yard to dry. This will be fourth year for two Snow Wave Magnets and two Canada/Spec Wave Magnets. Wave Magnet Bag – I keep my Wave Magnet decoys in a lunch pail size camo bag. They can be rolled up and placed in a coat pocket or in a Blind Bag. The separate bag is easier for me to keep up with through the season and again the next year when everything is pulled out of storage. NOTE: There is a support method of installing the 10-foot poles using a couple of 18-inch pieces of ¾-inch conduit and a 2-foot piece of ½-inch conduit. If you would like a photo of the conduit and couple or the use of the ¾-inch conduit.. Please email bfiedler@airmail.net BALLOON DECOYS - The snow goose balloon decoy resembles a goose. One side (top) is white and bottom is light gray. The top is a Snow Goose and the bottom is a Juvie Blue Goose. So if the decoy turns over it doesn’t matter. The Airgoose Snow Goose Balloon Decoys can be secured to anything. They work extremely well in connection with the Wave Magnet String Decoy. They can be filled with helium or air. On most days they work best when filled with helium. Use a small field bag to carry the Airgoose Balloon Decoys. In a pill container place a dozen safety pins. In a sandwich Zip Loc Bag place a roll of 4 pound fishing line. In a second sandwich Zip Loc bag place a roll of clear packaging tape. Place dozen Airgoose Snow Goose Balloon Decoys in the bag. A bottle of helium can be found (and refilled) at a number of locations in most cities. Look in the yellow pages or ask someone at a flower shop where they get their helium. Containers can be found at Wal Mart in boxes of balloons in the Stationary section of the store. Other discount stores also carry the box with helium tank and balloons.
To use Airgoose Balloon Decoys with Wave Magnet String Decoy– First – run a strip of packaging tape from bill to tail on bottom of decoy. Wrap a piece of tape around the bill. Second – Fill the decoy (a) With helium; stick the nozzle into the fill tab at the rear bottom. The tab is self-sealing. Hold the bill squeezed in one hand, fill until bill is 75 percent full, cut off gas. (b) With air – on the days when there is as strong wind. Using a soda straw insert in fill tab about 80 percent of the length of the straw. Blow air into the decoy until full. The decoys can be filled at the auto and carried to the field in a duffle bag or filled in the field. On the Wave Magnet there are five decoys. You should be filling six balloon decoys. The balloon decoys are placed one at each of 4 decoys and two at the fifth decoy. Third - Securing the decoy. After filled make a slip knot in a 4 to 5-foot piece of fishing line. Tie a safety pin to the other end of the line. Secure the safety pin to the rear of one of the Wave Magnet decoys. Slip a piece of packaging tape through the loop in the line. Wrap it around the bill of a decoy with the line at the bottom of the bill. Repeat this safety pin attachment four more times until there is a balloon decoy secured to each Wave Magnet decoy. Fourth – Tie a slipknot both ends of a 4 to 6-foot piece of fishing line. Slip a piece of tape through one end and around the bill of the sixth balloon decoy. Slip a piece of tape through the other end loop. Secure the tape over the front to rear strip already in placed. The balloon decoys will move the Wave Magnet decoys even in zero wind. On strong wind days the balloon decoys reduce the flapping of the Wave Magnet decoys. Time - Installing the balloon decoys will take 10 to 12 minutes. After doing once or twice takes about 5 minutes. Remove gas/air - To remove the gas or air from the balloon decoys, place the soda straw 80 percent into the fill tab; squeeze and roll up the up the decoy. Remove straw. Repair - If a hole is punched in the decoy. Fill with air, cover with water – just like finding a flat in a tire – and once found wipe dray and seal with gray duct tape or clear packaging tape. Durability - Twelve balloon decoys will last all season. For me this is 36 to 48 hunts. With care they will last at least two years. I’m on my third year with 5 of the balloon decoys. NOTE: The balloon decoys can be secured to a pole or to a fishing pole. Either can be used to bring the decoy to the ground to resemble a landing goose.
HUNTING THE SPREAD –Number 1: The hunter location. Place the blinds or backrest approximately 10 yards apart in a straight line with there back to the wind. Have each hunter place his or her gear and shell bags at the location and the shotgun on the blind or backrest. Number 2: The outline of the spread. One hunter places the perimeter decoys. A minimum of 20 yards to either side of the outside of the end hunter of end hunters. The dept should be a minimum of 75 yards to 120 yards to the rear (upwind) of the hunters. The design, if you haven’t discovered a design from watching feeding snows, is a teardrop. This allows the Landing Zone to be approximately 75 yards X 75 yards just to the rear (upwind of hunters) of the hunters. Why the Landing Zone Behind The Hunters - The best shot at a snow goose is while there wings are cupped and sailing over the hunters head – easier to get a good shot at the head, wing or full blast into the breast. Set up the spread to have the incoming geese come over the hunters – low – to reach a Landing Zone. Number 3: - The decoy placement. The rag decoys (Texas Rags or Windtamer Decoys) should be placed 5 to 6 feet apart – side-by-side and front to rear. 3 to 4 rows of decoys should be placed in front of the hunters and 2 to 3 rows behind the hunters. TIP: Texas Rag Windsock Decoys or Windtamer Windsock Decoys should be rolled into packs of 10. A pack of 10 should be laid beside each hunters location. The hunter is to place the 10 decoys around his location to better hide in the spread. One or two hunters should walk along the pattern and drop the rags. The other hunters walk along and place them in the ground at a 45-degree angle into the wind. If zero breeze or light breeze pull each rag decoy in front of you to fill with air, then grabbing at center of stake and place in the ground. The Windtamer will stay in puffed shape even in zero wind. The sides of the spread start off as full 6 to 7 decoys side by side then drop off to there being a couple of family groups of 10 at the rear of the teardrop. Once the rag decoys are in place, the specialty decoys should be placed. KITES – The Farm Form Kit is available in snow and blue. The snow is white with black wing tips. The Blue is a light grays the base color of a blue goose. The kite material is a lo shine plastic. Package contains 3 kites, the rolls of kite string, and 3 kite handles. The kite folds into a 2 to 3-inch by --- inch package. Fold out the kite and slip a thin wood dowel that fits in plastic receiver at the tip of each wing. The kite has a plastic centerpiece to attach the kite string. Flies in 7 to 15 mph wind. The kite is flown at 40 to 60 yards high, where obstructions from buildings, trees, blinds, etc. will not cause gusts. The kites create movement long distance. The kite will move from side to side, dip and move up and down. It is very effective in getting snow goose attention and steer the flight to your spread. After the spread is in place the last decoys to be put up are the kites. After the kite is “up” tie off to a ground decoy – make sure the anchor decoys are secured firmly to the ground. Repair – If the kite tears, seal it with a piece of clear packaging tape. If the support dowel breaks, a similar wood dowel can be obtained from Home Depot or any lumber outlet that carries wood dowels. Kite string can be obtained from most hobby stores. Wave the flag at far off passing geese to attract their attention. Bartz recommends that when you first see the flight of snow geese hold flag overhead and whip it back and forth to flap the wings aggressively. Bartz says “flagging” is the same wrist action as jigging a fishing rod. When the snow geese turn and spot the spread, but are still 200 plus yards from the hunters, the action is to bring the flag from high to the ground. This action simulates landing geese. Bartz believes that flagging is like calling. Some days you call more, some days less. At a long distance the flag is more important than calling to attract passing flights of geese. But, if you want to hunt in camo and must carry into the field on foot the Blanket Blind is your answer. You can check the Blind section of Duckngoose.com for more information on both blinds, or email bfiedler@airmail.net for more information. Backrest – The THP Spread Backrest offers a backrest make with an aluminum frame and black mesh. Designed to support, head, shoulders and back. This backrest is light, durable and elevates the average hunter for the best angle to shoot from the ground. Be safe – no accidental shotgun discharge trying to sit-up on a wet field. Tip: Build Your Own Backrest - Even if you must build a backrest – which is simple, requires a piece of 1x12, a hinge, and a piece of rope. For information and layout drawing email bfiedler@airmail.net. Trying to lie on a canvas on the ground is very dangerous. A few years ago, a father – trying to elevate himself on an elbow slipped and shot his son to his immediate right. White Parkas – When hunting in a spread the white parka, white cap and white or camo facemask is necessary. The white parkas can be purchased in cloth (polyester/cotton) or rubberized low shine white (to hunt in the rain or block wind on cold days). They are both made to go over quad parkas on a big hunter.

RECIPEANCHO-ORANGE DUCK6 ea large duck breasts, deboned, skinned On a flat working surface tenderize breasts with a Jaccard Deluxe Meat Tenderizer. In a non-conductive bowl place breasts, cover with water plus 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Refrigerate, change water every 20 minutes until water runs clear. Remove breast, discard water. Pat dry with paper towels. Rub breasts with 4 tablespoons of oil; rub breasts with Riverbed Seasoning. Place breasts on a dish, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. In a skillet over medium heat toast chilies until darker, turning with tongs, about 1 minute. In a heatproof bowl place chilies, add 2 cups of boiling water and soak for 20 minutes or until soft. In a blender (or Food Processor with knife blade) add chilies, garlic and 1 cup of chili water; pulse until well blended and smooth. In a saucepan cook jelly over medium heat until bubbly, whisk in blended chili sauce, lime juice and orange juice – little at a time; remove after well blended and smooth. In a skillet coat with non-stick vegetable spray. Over medium-high heat sear each breast on one side, about 3 minutes. Flip breast and sear second side, about 3 minutes. Add saucepan juices and sugar, cover and cook until a thermometer inserted in center of breast registers 135 degrees F (medium-rare) about 5 minutes. Place breasts on a cutting board, allow to sit for 5 to 10 minutes, slice across the grain in ¼-inch thick slices. With a wooden spoon scrape up the brown bits and mix in the lime-orange sauce. Whisk in salt, pepper and butter. Place rice equally on 6 plates, divide meat evenly over rice and drizzle hot orange-lime sauce over meat and rice. Yield: 6 servings. |
